By the way it's a traditional recipe but it's eaten in so many countries, from Egypt to Greece and from India to Morocco, that's why I don't think that there is a actual country where this dessert comes from. But let's just don't care about it, it's delicious in every way.
Syrup Yogurt Cake
(or Syrup Cake, Almond Cake, Lemon Almond Cake, Semolina Syrup Cake. Whatever. You decide.)125gm soft butter
150gm sugar
4 eggs
250gm semolina
2 tsp baking powder
200gm ground almonds
100gm sliced almonds
250gm yogurt (10-15%)
(optional: 200gm raisins)
Preheat oven to 180degC. Beat butter and sugar until fluffy, then add eggs and mix well. Fold in semolina, sieved baking powder, ground almonds, yogurt, sliced almonds (and raisins). Mix until well combined. Fill into a buttered round baking pan and bake for about 40-45 minutes.
Syrup:
200gm sugar
200ml water
150gm honey
(optional: lemon flavoured sugar)
Put ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil while continously stiring. Let boil for about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
Take hot cake out of the oven, take a toothpick and cut in all over the cake using the toothpick. Slowly pour over the hot syrup and let cool completely. Remove cake from baking pan, sprinkle with sliced almonds if desired and enjoy :)
